The top compression ring is an incomplete circular ring, it seals the combustion chamber, guarding against power loss due to gas leakage as well as lubricant contamination.
Interaction of the compression ring against the liner accounts for approximately 3-5% of all engine energy losses; therefore measurement of ring-bore conformance is a critical issue.
