Friction: Quantifying the influence of surfaces

Geometry of ring face-width has a significant effect on friction, it is not the idealised parabola which is often assumed. They have asymmetrical axial profiles.

Ring surfaces are rough. Compression ring accounts for 1-3% of fuel energy.

Friction changes significantly with ring axial profile.
